A specific pattern

Elite pipelines.

Industries where top-end pay reaches $500k–$5M+, but entry runs through narrow gates: specific schools, recruiting windows, and credentials. Not "better" careers — a specific trade-off.

Read this first

The ceiling is real, but so are the filters

The top-end numbers on these pages aren't clickbait. They're realistic for people who clear every gate. The gates are just very narrow: specific colleges the industry recruits at, specific GPAs, recruiting cycles that start in sophomore year of college, or a decade of training before you earn a full salary.

Most people in these fields don't hit the top

About 70% of investment banking analysts leave within 3 years. Only about 10 to 15% of associates at top corporate law firms ever make partner. Most McKinsey / Bain / BCG consultants leave by year 4. About half of med students end up in lower-paying specialties. The ceiling applies to a minority of people who enter.

High salary doesn't always mean high net worth

$225k in NYC after taxes, rent, and $300k of loans often grows more slowly than $80k in Ohio with $0 debt. A new corporate lawyer in year 5 can have less in the bank than a journeyman electrician the same age. The ceiling is about potential, not guaranteed wealth.

Other careers have different kinds of ceilings

A plumber with a crew can clear $200k+. A senior airline pilot at a major carrier out-earns most bankers. An actuary hits $250k with great hours and no debt. A founder can sell their company for more than a 20-year surgeon earns in total. This page covers one pattern, not the whole picture.

The paths

25 careers across 5 groups

Prestige professions

Finance, consulting and corporate leadership

Same target schools, same recruiting cycles.

What's not on this page

Plenty of careers with excellent pay ceilings are deliberately not here: senior airline pilots, actuaries (the people who price risk for insurance companies), dentists, pharmacists, top tradespeople with their own crews, bootstrapped software founders, Main Street small-business owners, and more. They reach similar places through very different routes. Browse the full library or the payoff patterns for those.

Salary and cost data primarily from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Elite-pipeline and founder figures come from industry surveys and are labeled on each career page. Last refreshed April 2026.
